Mission Statement
Mission Statement:
The Ruben Dario Middle Community School counseling program mission is to provide a safe environment in which to assist all students in developing their academic, social, career and personal strengths in order to become successful citizens in a world of work and technology.
Roles and Responsibilities of School Counselors:
- Conducts guidance sessions in the classroom to assist students with developing life long skills, e.g., problem solving, decision making, goal setting.
- Assists students in tracking their own academic progress toward meeting promotional requirements using personalized tools such as Report Cards and Student Academic Histories in individual and group sessions.
- Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians and teachers, to assist in developing appropriate strategies to promote and support academic achievement and improve student behavior.
- Coordinates student services articulation, orientation and transition activities.
- Helps students and parents/guardian understand test information and options.
- Provides individual counseling sessions to help students deal with crisis intervention, transitional issues, and personal and family concerns.
- Provide individual and small group counseling for students with special needs. Special needs include, but are not limited to, students: with counseling on their Individual Educational Plan, who have been retained, with poor attendance, dealing with a crisis, with discipline referrals or difficulty with peer relationships.
- Provides information on high school options such as: Magnet Schools, Career Academies, Vocational/Technical Schools, and International Baccalaureate programs; and academic acceleration options available in high school such as Florida Virtual School, dual enrollment classes, and Advanced Placement courses and the 18-credit accelerated graduation paths.
