While the holiday season is often a time of joy and togetherness, it can also bring increased stress and anxiety. Disruptions in daily routines can lead to feelings of uncertainty. Social pressure to be festive and generous can be overwhelming, especially for those facing financial difficulties or social anxiety. The holidays can amplify feelings of loss for those mourning or unable to connect with loved ones.
To support the mental health of our students and families over the holidays, we offer the following recommendations:
- Encourage open discussion of feelings and concerns, using active listening and empathy to offer reassurance and understanding.
- Reduce stress by focusing on quality time and meaningful connections instead of material possessions.
- Promote overall well-being by maintaining regular sleep, healthy eating, and using relaxation techniques like exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature.
- If sadness, anxiety, or stress becomes overwhelming, individuals should be encouraged to reach out to a therapist or counselor for support.
Attached are the Department of Mental Health Services flyers to share with students, parents, and families. These flyers provide information about school and community mental health services, as well as 24-hour crisis support contacts.
